The Alabama Hills are majestic, sitting underneath Mount Whitney, the iconic tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. If you’re looking for an absolutely stunning location with the best light, an incredible backdrop at every corner, and easy access- The Alabama Hills area is simply perfect. I was stoked when Lauren and Tavis agreed to model for this styled elopement photoshoot. We kept it simple, and these photos doubled as their anniversary portraits.
Here are some things to consider when planning to elope in the Alabama Hills:
Are the Alabama Hills too popular for an Adventurous Elopement?
At this point, the Alabama Hills are so popular that they are also getting busy with crowds. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to practice Leave No Trace principles. Be prepared during spring and fall seasons to fight with crowds.
Season and Time of Day for best Photos
I’m a sucker for a sunrise session and some alpine glow. This is not just for the stunning light that is possible– it is also the most quiet and peaceful time of day. If you want to elope at the Alabama Hills, I 100% recommend sunrise because it is a popular area.
Camping and things to Do near the Alabama Hills
Camping is easy in the area. However, starting in 2022, they will be requiring permits to protect the area and minimize impact. You can read more info on the BLM website.
Other Options for an Adventurous Elopement Nearby
Ok, so what if you’d rather go off the beaten path and not wander the popular trails of the Alabama Hills? Well, you’re in luck. The entire Eastern Sierra, from the AB Hills all the way up to Yosemite, is simply stacked with amazing views and places to explore YEAR ROUND. Mammoth Lakes is probably the most well known city in the area, but I can take you on any kind of hike you want into the Sierra Mountains complete with alpine lakes, variety of trees and desert views, canyons, vistas, etc. Depending on the time of year, the mountains are not always accessible, but that’s when we head to the desert and sand dunes and boulders!
